Oh, so you know how to cut and paste hadith?

A student needs to invest years of dedicated study to truly master their chosen subject, does anyone think Islam any different? Who can expect to be an overnight expert?

Even if a person studies a college or university course for a few years, they will still have only covered a tiny fraction of the vast percentage of material that exists on their chosen subject. While no one can deny what the student has learned, they would still not be a master of their subject.

Mastering a subject still requires years of research and personal dedication. What this means, is that almost no one is in an authentic position to judge anyone else. So please, less judging, more self improvement and personal development.

Oh, so you know how to cut and paste hadith...

Only Allah SWT knows our final destination…

By Paul Salahuddin Armstrong

“…IF My servants ask thee about Me – behold, I am near; I respond to the call of him who calls, whenever he calls unto Me: let them, then, respond unto Me, and believe in Me, so that they might follow the right way.”
~ Holy Qur’an 2:186 (M. Asad)

Allah SWT is always with you and every single one of us, whether our religion happens to be orthodox Islam or something else.

We connect consciously, through the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah, in our prayers, in our actions, when giving charity, at work and other day to day actions.

Whether someone is a Jew, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, another religion or none, they may come to remember their Creator, and start to develop a connection as a consequence.

Do you think Allah SWT will turn anyone away, who knocks on His metaphorical door? Of course not! Allah is Al Rahman (The Compassionate), Al Raheem (The Kind), Al Wadud (The Lover) and Al Kareem (The Generous).

When someone decides who goes to Jannah or Jahannam, they are falsely usurping the Divine Right of Allah SWT. Whatever a person does or doesn’t do in this life, Allah SWT is The Judge on the Day of Reckoning.

Due to His perfect and endless knowledge, wisdom and understanding, Allah SWT doesn’t think like any human does, He transcends everything in Creation in brilliance and splendor, for She is the Spirit who imagined all else into existence.

We are utterly, completely, enthrallingly dependent upon Allah SWT. We should never forget our position before the Master of Creation…

We have been honoured that Allah SWT chose to send messengers and guides to our species, giving us the opportunity to raise in maqam above the other animals, should we take on board this Divine advice.

Let’s never forget that, and get above our station in respect to Allah SWT, for that surely must be the greatest of blasphemies…

Respect everyone, for no one knows who Allah SWT will bless, forgive and rescue on that Day.

Only Allah SWT knows our final destination

Remember the Shaheeds…

Remember the brave Shaheeds who went before us, fighting for Liberty, Justice and Security for our Human Family. May their sacrifices never be forgotten.

“But do not think of those that have been slain in God’s cause as dead. Nay, they are alive! With their Sustainer have they their sustenance, exulting in that [martyrdom] which God has bestowed upon them out of His bounty. And they rejoice in the glad tiding given to those [of their brethren] who have been left behind and have not yet joined them, that no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.”
~ Holy Qur’an 3:169-170 (M. Asad)

The Ink of the Scholar

AOBM stands by Dr Usama Hasan

By Paul Salahuddin Armstrong
Co-Director, AOBM

Imam Usama Hasan is not wrong to state that Muslims need to move on from a basic children’s understanding of creation. He has every right to hold the views he does. No amount of disagreement gives anyone the right to issue death threats. Life is a sacred gift from Allah and not something to be taken lightly. We should be thanking Allah for every moment of the lives He’s given us, not threatening the lives of others.

Issuing death threats is completely unacceptable. Islam is a religion that upholds the principles of Law and Universal Human Rights of all human beings. But this new trend of some wayward folk, who seem to think it’s acceptable to threaten or take the lives of others, is a new low that has no place whatsoever in the deen of Islam. Murder is a crime against God and humanity, a crime Muslims have a duty to, where possible, try to prevent, not be the cause of! How far astray have these people gone, that they seem to think it permissible for them to kill or threaten the lives of their brothers and sisters in our human family?

Imam Usama Hasan’s scientific views are not in any way contradictory to Islam, it’s not like he was suggesting we change aspects of the religious practices of Islam or something like that. Even if someone were to do so, the appropriate response would be to discuss the matter with them, not to threaten their life and wellbeing. All Dr Hasan did, was to state a scientific view which he holds, one that is based upon well established scientific enquiry and evidence. The fact that he has been forced to publicly retract his views (which he obviously still holds) brings great shame on the Muslim community, and just shows how far we’ve departed from the ways of our great forerunners from the 13th Century CE. While the West has indisputably developed, largely based on knowledge learned in the Middle Ages from Muslims; it seems that some Muslims have devolved back to a state of ignorance (jahiliyya), far removed from the high academic understanding of truly great scholars of Islam, such as Al-Jahiz, Ibn Sina, Al-Hazen and others like them.

As a person who deeply loves Allah, His Beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and this deen of grace, mercy, reason and understanding that Allah has gifted unto us, I feel compelled to speak out against this ignorance and stand up for people like Imam Usama Hasan, who are simply trying to help Muslims grow in knowledge and understanding, both in terms of their faith and in other areas of learning.

Means of insight…

Means of insight have now come unto you from your Sustainer [through this divine writ]. Whoever, therefore, chooses to see, does so for his own good; and whoever chooses to remain blind, does so to his own hurt. And [say unto the blind of heart]: “I am not your keeper.”

And thus do We give many facets to Our messages. And to the end that they might say, “Thou hast taken [all this] well to heart,” and that We might make it clear unto people of [innate] knowledge, follow thou what has been revealed unto thee by thy Sustainer – save whom there is no deity – and turn thy back upon all who ascribe divinity to aught beside Him.

Yet if God had so willed, they would not have ascribed divinity to aught beside Him; hence, We have not made thee their keeper, and neither art thou responsible for their conduct. But do not revile those [beings] whom they invoke instead of God, lest they revile God out of spite, and in ignorance: for, goodly indeed have We made their own doings appear unto every community. In time, [however,] unto their Sustainer they must return: and then He will make them [truly] understand all that they were doing.

- Holy Qur’an 6:104-108 (M. Asad)

Untold Stories : Holocaust Memorial Day 2011

It’s Going to Rain
Valdemar Kalinin

It’s about to rain, getting darker,
The leaves have long fallen from the trees,
Leaving desolation where just an old man
Roams,
Picking handfuls of earth where Roma
Perished.

During this war Nazis shot them dead,
Roma seized and put in wagons, oh
Filled with children and the Roma old,
No mercy shown to a single soul.

Buried here auntie, grandpa, grannie,
But God spared a small one,
Who visits to imagine,
The perished wait for him.

No monument stands,
Except in the minds of the old,
Woods and land bore witness,
This older man declares:
Roma are buried here, don’t disturb this land!

There Is a Last Solitary Coach
David Vogel

There is a last, solitary coach about to leave.
Let us get in and go,
For it won’t wait.

I have seen young girls going softly
With sad faces
That looked ashamed and sorry
Like purple sunsets,

And chubby, pink children
Who went simply
Because they were called.

And I’ve seen men
Who stepped proud and straight through the world’s streets,
Whose large eyes went ranging
Far and wide,
They too got in calmly
And left.

And we are the last.
Day is declining.
The last, solitary coach is about to leave.
Let us too get in quietly
And go,
For it won’t wait.

First They Came
Pastor Martin Niemoller

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialist
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Statement of Commitment

HMD has taken place in the UK since 2001. It was established at a meeting on 27 January 2000, when representatives from forty-four governments around the world met in Stockholm to discuss Holocaust education, remembrance and research. At the conclusion of the forum, the delegates unanimously signed a declaration. This forms the HMD Statement of Commitment which is used a basis for HMD events in the UK and Internationally.

  • we recognise that the Holocaust shook the foundations of modern civilisation. Its unprecedented character and horror will always hold universal meaning
  • we believe the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s collective memory. We honour the survivors still with us, and reaffirm our shared goals of mutual understanding and justice
  • we must make sure that future generations understand the causes of the Holocaust and reflect upon its consequences. We vow to remember the victims of Nazi persecution and of all genocides
  • we value the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives to protect or rescue victims, as a touchstone of the human capacity for good in the face of evil
  • we recognise that humanity is still scarred by the belief that race, religion, disability or sexuality make some people’s lives worth less than others’. Genocide, anti-semitism, racism, xenophobia and discrimination still continue. We have a shared responsibility to fight these evils
  • we pledge to strengthen our efforts to promote education and research about the Holocaust and other genocides. We will do our utmost to make sure that the lessons of such events are fully learnt
  • we will continue to encourage Holocaust remembrance by holding an annual UK Holocaust Memorial Day. We condemn the evils of prejudice, discrimination and racism. We value a free, respectful, and democratic society

Many organisers have incorporated the Statement of Commitment into their remembrance events, reminding everyone why we commemorate HMD. It may be appropriate at your event to ask different community representatives to each read a clause of the Statement of Commitment as a symbol of joining together to fight all forms of discrimination.

In order to increase understanding of the purpose of HMD and the principles which guide commemorations of HMD amongst diverse communities and new migrants to the UK the Statement of Commitment has been translated into a variety of languages.
