1. If He gives us wealth?
2. If He grants us health?
3. If He gives us power?
4. If He gives us children?
5. …………?
A scholar once said, “I was wondering if Allah loves me.”
So he checked the Holy Quran to see what are the characteristics of the people that Allah has mentioned He loves them.
He discovered that Allah loves ‘al muttaqeen’ (the pious), he said, “I wouldn’t dare consider myself among them!”
So he continued searching….
Then he found Allah loves ‘as sabireen’ (the patient). But he remembered just how impatient he is.
So he continued searching….
He found that Allah loves ‘al mujahideen’ (those who strive in His path), but quickly realised how lazy and powerless he is.
So he continued searching….
Then he found Allah loves ‘al muhsineen’ (those who do good deeds). But it dawned on him just how far he was from that.
A little downhearted he said, “I stopped searching to avoid more disappointment. I reflected on my good deeds, I found most of them are mixed with ego, laziness, coldness, flaws and sins.
“But it was then I remembered Allah loves ‘at tawwabeen’ (those who repent). I realised this is the one for me and for others like me.
Now in euphoric mood as he realised just how infinite are the oceans of Allah’s love and compassion, whose shores can never be reached, the scholar couldn’t contain himself saying, “Astaghfirullah wa atooubu ilaih” (I seek God’s forgiveness and repent to him) in abundance every day, so he could be among Allah’s lovers, who Allah loves more than they could ever imagine.
May we be able to at least seek forgiveness often enough to be among those who Allah loves… and perhaps one day be among those who love Allah.
